The Focus of His Guze, Anji's New Reflection.
Why Anji hates the Meiji Government
Anji was not affected from the Futae no Kiwami completely because a memorial tablet had blocked the full impact. Looking at it brings back memories of the past. Once, when Anji was not so built, he worked at a temple where he took care of a few children. One older girl looked up to Anji so much that she thought she and Anji would one day marry. The children were all orphans because their parents, members of the Bakufu, most likely died or gave them up. The village leader had wanted to children gone, otherwise the Meiji Government would not support them. Anji decided with the children to move the following day, but while meditating that evening, he returned to the temple, only to find it in flames. He prayed to Hotoke, begging his god to save the children, but nothing happened for poor Anji. Five years later, Anji found the village leader and his men, the ones who had killed the children he loved and cared for, and slayed them without mercy. This was the new, current Anji.

The Futae no Kiwami won't decide this match.
It seems as though Anji had told his past out loud. Both Sano and Anji once again engage in combat. Sano is determined to show Anji the light, just like how Kenshin showed him. Blows are exchanged by both men, both using the Futae no Kiwami. In the battle, the technique is pretty much useless; both men have the same will to keep fighting. Finally, after countless blows that do no good, Anji draws the sword that rests on the back of his belt. The fallen priest uses a technique known as the Touate, slamming his sword onto the ground, releasing the impact of the Futae no Kiwami with it. Sano is caught completely off guard, so he is hit. However, Sano won't fall for the same trick twice. When Anji tries to execute the Touate again, Sano leaps up to dodge and charges at Anji fist first. Anji throws his fist forward to connect with Sano. Both men hit the Futae no Kiwami at the same time and end up falling back in opposite directions. When Sano tells Anji the children he cared for did not expect him to kill for them, Anji begins reflecting back on the past a bit more.

Are they ready?
The children Anji cared for appear before him as visions. Just by seeing them, Anji's eyes change before everyone, symbolizing that he is a different man, no longer filled with the hatred he once had. Sano has officially won the battle, but he is unable to move. He tells Kenshin and Saitou to go on without him, but before the two leave, Anji stops Kenshin, telling the rurouni to go back to the Aoiya where his friends are in danger. There's no use in turning back, Shishio's base is practically a maze. Kenshin has faith in his friends back at the Aoiya. Before Kenshin and Saitou leave for good, Anji asks Kenshin if he has any medicine on hand. Kenshin gives the priest the medicine Megumi made for him and departs with Saitou.

Usui, The Next Opponent
Other members of the Juppon Gatana have arrived at the Aoiya. As Kenshin hopes that his master helps his friends at the restaurant harboring former Oniwa Banshu members, his group arrives at the next room where the next challenger awaits. Yumi opens the doors, calling into the dark room for Usui. Slowly, the lights come up, revealing Usui's room, completely decorated with eyes. Usui is a bit disappointed with his competition, but asks Kenshin and Saitou who'll be the first to die.
