Himura Kenshin
vs.
Shinomori Aoshi

While passing through Shishio's base, headed for Soujirou's room, Kenshin had entered Hoji's room after sensing that Aoshi had been inside. Aoshi was inside indeed, and he was prepared to tear Kenshin apart to earn the title of the strongest for himself and the Oniwa Banshu. Kenshin had promised Misao to bring the real Aoshi back to the Aoiya, thus, the battle had started. Without drawing his sword, Kenshin rushed forward, as did Aoshi. Kenshin threw a dozen of books in Aoshi's face to begin things, but simply, Aoshi cut through them with his twin kodachis. Really, Kenshin didn't want to fight Aoshi, so he tried not to fight him head-on.

Separated by a bookshelf, Kenshin tackled into it, causing a bunch of books to topple over. Enraged, Aoshi cut the books and the bookshelf, targetting Kenshin. Luckily, Kenshin had drawn his Sakabatou to block, but his game plan had changed. Once Kenshin had leapt away from the collision of swords, Aoshi charged after him, slashing him various directions. Kenshin was cut a few times in the onslaught, but once Aoshi had left himself open, Kenshin immediately went for the Ryu Kan Sen. To Kenshin's surprise, Aoshi had blocked the attack. With an elbow to the face, Aoshi knocked Kenshin down.

Down and against a bookshelf was Kenshin. One of Aoshi's kodachis had come flying directly at him as Aoshi executed his Onmyou Hasshi. Kenshin blocked it quickly, but yet another one sprung forward. As quick as he blocked the first kodachi, Kenshin avoided the second. Aoshi kicked Kenshin in his face after he avoided from being hit twice, demanding that Kenshin fight seriously. After a brief exchange of words, Kenshin got up and charged for Aoshi. Both men clashed again. Kenshin was shoved back into the bookshelf and Aoshi tried to stab him. Again, Kenshin dodged Aoshi's attack and kicked him in the side to get away from up against the wall.

Once Kenshin was free, Aoshi crossed his kodachis, attempting his Gokou Juuji. Kenshin immediately broke the stance by moving Aoshi's swords apart with a Ryu Sho Sen. Following, Kenshin leapt into the air and came down with a Ryu Tsui Sen. Aoshi had blocked the attack, but when Kenshin somersaulted in midair, he was hit. Now, Kenshin was fighting seriously, but he wanted to make something clear. Kenshin told Aoshi that he was being selfish and was disgracing the name of his friends by acting in such a manner to earn the title of the strongest. Aoshi has become possessed and has forgotten his original goal. Only Kenshin could turn Aoshi back.

Aoshi had realized that he had done wrong. Frustrated, he began to slap Kenshin around. Once he was relieved of frustration, Aoshi promised to return to the Aoiya, but only after the fight was completed. During the silence previous to the final attacks, Sanosuke heard a clicking sound. Finally, he realized that Yumi was contacting Shishio by telegraph, so he warned Kenshin not to use the succession technique. Aoshi took advantage of the situation as Kenshin's attention was distracted for a second. With both kodachis turned upside-down, Aoshi charged forward, ready to hit the Kaiten Kenbu Roku Ren. Without a second wasted, Kenshin hit Aoshi with the Ama Kakeru Ryuu no Hirameki to end the battle.
