Anji had originally
resided at a Buddhist temple near a small village where
he acted as the guardian of a bunch of oprhans whose parents
had died during the Douran War. They had lived peacefully,
with Anji teaching them to respect Hotoke, his god, for
he would one day take them to a better life. It appeared
that nothing would go wrong until the village began to
have financial problems. There would be no money flow
from the Meiji Government unless the orphans Anji had
been taking care of were ridden of. Anji had set up to
move with the children, yet, the village leader found
it easier to just eliminate them for good. The night before
the departure, Anji's temple was burnt to the ground with
the oprhans in it. Fortunately, Anji was not present inside,
he had been meditating not too far away, but soon discovered
what the village leader had done.
Five years
later, Anji had bulked up his body and sought revenge,
killing the village leaders and all those involved with
the destruction of his temple and the deaths of the ones
he cared for the most. Ever since he had lost the orphans,
Anji grew to hate the Meiji Government. Somehow, he had
aligned with Shishio, hoping to bring down the government,
but he had later turned himself into the authorities once
he saw the light thanks to some help from his fight wtih
Sanosuke. All of the murders he commited would not make
the children he lost happy. Therefore, when the Juppon
Gatana disbanded and Shishio died, Anji threw himself
into a prison in Hokkaido, presumably for life.
The power
Anji wields as a god of death and punishment is by far
one of the most powerful attacks ever seen. The Futae
no Kiwami is his trademark maneuver. He can use the deadly
attack with any part of his body, unlike Sanosuke, whom
he taught it to for showing determination to learn and
sharing the same hate for the Meiji Government.
