Driven by
a desire to obliterate Kenshin for not allowing him to
die an honorable death is what caused Kujiranami to join
Enishi's cause. Back in the Bakumatsu and during the Battle
of Toba Fushimi, Kujiranami had his right arm cut off
by Kenshin, who had already begun to live by the oath
of not to kill. There, he wanted to be killed, but Kenshin
told him that he wouldn't be better off dead. From them
on, the large man, already of few words, began to scream
the name 'Battousai' when engaged in combat.
To replace
his missing arm, Kujiranami was given an Armstrong cannon
by Enishi, which he used to blow up the Akabeko and Chief
Uramura's residence. His upgraded weapon, a grenade launcher,
also a gift from Enishi, was never put to use until after
the attack on the Kamiya Dojo. It was confiscated by the
police, but Kujiranami had broken out of his prison cell
to find and use it for his rampage in the streets of Tokyo
in search of Kenshin.
It was Yahiko
of all people to stand up to Kujiranami during his rampage.
Everyone was practically away and no where near to prevent
the attacks, so Yahiko stood up to the one-armed man and
kept him occupied until Kenshin arrived. Once again, Kujiranami's
right arm was cut off, and Yahiko argued the fact that
Kujiranami's anger held against Kenshin has done nothing
for him except lead him down the wrong path. Moved by
Yahiko's choice words, Kujiranami accepted the fact that
he was wrong. Before he turned himself into the police,
he apologized to Kenshin for all his crimes.
