The Takani
name has been famous in the medicine field. Megumi's father,
Takani Ryusei, is quite well-known. However, at the young
age of eleven, Megumi began a life of lonliness. During
a battle in her hometown, Aizu, Megumi's father was killed,
as he was a doctor who tended to the injured on the battlefield.
Megumi was also separated from her mother and brother
during this battle, forcing her to seek a way of income
by herself.
Megumi soon
took a job as a doctor's assistant in Tokyo. She had always
wanted to be a doctor because it was in her blood. Yet,
the doctor she worked for manufactured opium for a big
time drug dealer named Takeda Kanryu. When the two got
into a disagreement, Kanryu shot and killed the doctor.
Since Megumi had witnessed the incident, she was forced
to take the doctor's place in manufacturing the drug,
as she had also required the skill of making opium from
the doctor.
Miserable
was Megumi, dealing drugs, which she knew wasn't right.
Opium sold well on the streets, but Kanryu wanted something
even better than the current product. Megumi was forced
into making a more powerful opium, one that could kill
if taken. A few bags of the new opium were sold, and those
who bought it eventually died after taking it. The most
notable death of the bunch was Sanosuke's friend Yoita.
Megumi tried
to escape Kanryu, turning to assistance from Kenshin,
who she ran into at a gambling hall along with Sano. Kanryu
wouldn't let the one that lays the golden eggs run off
so easily without at least telling him the secret of making
the deadly drug. Kenshin and Sano protected Megumi from
the men chasing her, Kanryu's thugs and the Oniwa Banshu.
Yet, Sano could care less of what would happen to Megumi
once he learned she was the one that sold the drug that
killed his friend. Many times, Megumi has thought about
suicide to escape her life. When she was captured by Beshimi
of the Oniwa Banshu and was locked up in a tower awaiting
to be tortured by Kanryu for defying him, Megumi readied
her knife for her own death. Luckily, just in time, the
Kenshin Gumi arrived and Sano prevented Megumi from throwing
away her life.
Kenshin convinced
Megumi to continue living as a doctor to assist the sick
and wounded, atoning for her wrongs, just like he is.
Although she was a drug dealer, Megumi's name was cleared
by Kenshin, preventing her from getting thrown into jail.
Megumi became Doctor Oguni's assistant and lived at his
residence until she moved back to Aizu after Kenshin's
battle with Enishi. Often she had stopped by the Kamiya
Dojo to flirt with Kenshin and tease Kaoru. Yahiko has
no qualms with the foxy doctor, the nickname of Megumi
given to her by all men who saw interest in her, because
she had saved his life once. In secret, Megumi has a liking
to the ex-gangster Sanosuke. She is too shy to tell Sanosuke
her true feelings, so she pretends to like Kenshin, although
she knows he's already taken.
