Hailing from
Mibu, Saitou is a deadly, skilled samurai. His rank as
the captain of the third division of the Shinsen Gumi
proves it. The philosophy Saitou and the rest of the Shinsen
Gumi go by is Aku, Soku, Zan, meaning to kill evil immediately,
or somewhere along those terms. His theory is also shared
with that of the Battousai, Himura Kenshin.
During the
Bakumatsu, Saitou had many battles, but his toughest ones
were against Kenshin. Their battle during the end of the
period was not completed and never was. When the Shinsen
Gumi disbanded and the Tokugawa Government fell, Saitou
quickly took on the job as an undercover policeman and
changed his name to Fujita Goro.
One case Saitou
had received was to determine Kenshin's power in order
to see if he could be worthy enough to take on Shishio
Makoto. Using his keen tactics, Saitou had set up a plan
to get him another battle with Kenshin, but that battle
ended in a draw as well. Never again did they battle because
for the majority of the time, Saitou was forced to team
up with his arch-enemy.
Saitou is
most likely the only Shinsen Gumi captain alive in the
current time. The others nine were either killed or died
from an illness. He is best known for being a vicious
wolf, always attacking no matter how hurt he is. Plain
soba is one of his favorite dishes and sake aggravates
his will to kill. Saitou prefers to use his Gatotsu attacks
in battle. Although repetitive, the attacks hold much
strength, depending how well Saitou's legs are. He assisted
a lot to bring down Shishio by having many bits of information
and learned of Enishi's hideaway island by slaving Chou,
his new underling because of the Juppon Gatana's disbandment.
It's a little known fact, but Saitou is in fact married
to a woman named Tokio.
Kenshin had
offered Saitou to conclude their battle once and for all,
once Enishi was dealt with. However, Saitou declined the
offer because the man he wanted to fight was Battousai,
not Himura Kenshin. Later, he disappeared from his Kenshin's
sight once and for all by transferring to Hokkaido.
