When still
a very small child, Yahiko's mother had gotten sick, so
his father, desperate for money, asked for a loan from
the Shuei Gumi. Yahiko's father was granted the loan,
but in return, he had to work for the gang in order to
pay off the debt. When his father passed away, Yahiko
took on his father's role and worked as a pickpocket.
It was the assistance of Kenshin and Kaoru that got Yahiko
out of the Shuei Gumi. Really, Yahiko had already paid
off his father's debt, but they were just using him for
quick cash and a punching bag.
Yahiko is
from a line of Tokyo samurai, thus, he wants to be strong.
To improve his skills, Kenshin forced him into enrolling
as a student of the Kamiya Kasshin Ryuu School. Usually,
Yahiko tends to slack off on his training, which is usually
just housework, but he is very skilled with the shinai
for his age. Only when he puts his mind to it is when
Yahiko performs his best. In order to learn the Kamiya
Kasshin Ryuu succession technique, Yahiko had to endure
a thousand shirahadoris and in the end was able to execute
the move a lot faster than his teacher.
The person
Yahiko looks up to the most is Kenshin, mainly because
he's the strongest in all Japan. The person Yahiko finds
interest in, relationship-wise, is Tsubame, which is rather
odd because he often yells at her when she calls him 'Yahiko-chan'.
His rival is Yutarou, and the ones he argues with a lot
are Kaoru and Sano.
Since Yahiko
is able to witness Kenshin's fights so much, he is able
not only to perform the techniques of the Kamiya Kasshin
Ryuu, but a few of the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu. Over a period
of time, Yahiko matures and keeps the pride he had ever
since his parents passed away. With maturity, Yahiko gains
strength. Before, he couldn't participate in any of the
battles because Kenshin feared he would get hurt, but
after his major victory over Kariwa Henya and fairing
well against Otowa Hyoko, people's opinions changed. The
biggest victory Yahiko had was over Genbu of the Four
Stars, who he had outsmarted in tactical combat.
As time passed,
Kenshin and Kaoru had a son. Kenshin, who had retired
in a sense, gave his Sakabatou away to Yahiko, the successor
of Kamiya Kasshin Ryuu. Yahiko also took on the task of
carrying out Kenshin's neverending goal. In his teenage
years, Yahiko is a feared man by thugs on the streets
of Tokyo. Everyone knows how great of a warrior he is.
Even with the symbol 'evil' on the back of his shirt,
in memory of Sanosuke, who had left to travel the world,
Yahiko is the same old kid.
