The Tsukayamas
of Izu are a wealthy family, the wealthiest of the area.
Unfortunately, both the mother and father of Yutarou,
the only child of the Tsukayama family, passed away. Since
then, Yutarou had been living alone with a few servants
of the family. While the servants did all of the work,
Yutarou tended to complain about his longing for a swordmaster
as good as his father was to teach him kenjutsu.
Yutarou found
that fatherly image in Isurugi Raijuuta. He had taken
off on a path by himself and was encountered by a group
of thugs. Yutarou's life was in danger at the time, but
he was saved by the man who he would soon name his teacher.
Raijuuta named
Yutarou a member of his Shinko Ryuu without teaching him
a thing. Yutarou was given one of Raijuuta's swords, but
it held no value for the boy who was clueless about wielding
it. It took a beat down from Yahiko to change Yutarou's
perspective.
After losing
to Yahiko, who later became his permanent rival, Yutarou
wanted to grow stronger. He did just that by becoming
a Kamiya Kasshin Ryuu student for a few days. There was
much potential seen in young Yutarou. His progression
level was speedy, though he still kept the same attitude
that Raijuuta is the most superior swordsman on the planet.
Even when
Raijuuta revealed his true colors, showing blatantly that
he was using Yutarou all along for shelter and money,
Yutarou still kept his faith in the teacher that taught
him nothing. Again, it took a physical action to change
his mind once and for all. Previous to a skirmish between
Kenshin and Raijuuta, Yutarou's right arm was hit with
Raijuuta's Izuna technique. It was no accidental hit.
Yutarou was
unable to wield a sword from then on. However, there was
always his left hand. He began to excel in the usage of
his other arm with the determination of defeating Yahiko.
After the entire Raijuuta incident, Yutarou and a servant
ventured to Germany, where medicine was more advanced.
He later returned to Japan, where he enrolled in the Kamiya
Kasshin Ryuu at the Kamiya Dojo and rose to the rank of
top student along with Yahiko.
Note:
Yutarou's father is actually alive in the manga. It's
a long story, but I will post the differences when I get
the chance to re-read the Raijuuta/Yutarou arc again.
When he returns to Japan, assumingly with his father,
Yutarou is never actually seen. His name is just posted
on the Kamiya Dojo's wall in the same field as Yahiko's.
Supposedly, he is not only rivals with Yahiko in combat,
but in the field of romance as well. Some say that Yutarou
also has his eyes on Tsubame. For all I know, that's just
something made up by a fan. There is no evidence. In the
anime, Yutarou returns to Japan with a German doctor and
stays for a couple of episodes. (I have not actually finished
watching that certain arc yet.)
