Like the previous
volume, the Rurouni Kenshin OAVs are above average
on DVD, to say the least. The video and audio are
basically unchanged and the subtitles are still
in the slightly larger than normal font.
The menus are the
same, with a few exceptions. There are different
pictures for this second volume and instead of a
sword coming down the screen when you move into
another menu, an axe comes down, sound effect included.
"One of These Nights" is the background
music of choice, still.
Extras are similar
to the first OAV volume: character profiles (Kenshin,
Okita, Tomoe, Katagai, Tatsumi, Enishi, Iizuka),
the Samurai X trailer, and screenwriter notes by
Lowell Bartholomee. Once again, the character profiles
give a good insight of the main characters, including
a clip of the character in action from one of the
episodes and the names of the voice actors. There
is no music included in the character profiles'
menu. The Samurai X trailer is nothing to drool
over. Like I said in the previous volume's review,
I don't care for trailers. The screenwriter notes
aren't an interesting read, in my own opinion. Lowell
Bartholomee writes about how it was a great experience
to translate the Rurouni Kenshin OAVs to retain
most of the storyline in the English dub version,
and that's about it. What annoys me rather than
how dull the read of the screenwriter notes are
is that ADV Films once again used the scrolling
fashion, meaning the notes come from the bottom
of your screen and rise slowly to the top, then
disappear. If you're not a fast reader, you'll have
to pause every couple seconds. It gets annoying.
In the background of the screenwriter notes, however,
is a different piece of music. Instead of "One
of These Nights" used again, "Testament"
can be heard.
