Thoughts at Dawn

Tsubame wakes up in the morning with bedhair. When she greets Kaoru, she frightens the Kamiya Kasshin Ryuu instructor. Kaoru sits down with Tsubame to comb her hair. A conversation begins thanks to Tsubame, who asks Kaoru if she has the slightest clue of what's going on. Kaoru herself doesn't know, but she bets her money that Sanosuke and Kenshin know but won't tell. Once Kaoru finishes up with Tsubame's hair, she tells her to get Yahiko so they can eat breakfast. Tsubame peeks into Yahiko's room and finds that he's gone. The two girls go outside and find Yahiko still standing at the entryway. Yahiko doesn't face either of them. He stands in place and again asks Kaoru if he can learn the Kamiya Kasshin Ryuu succession technique. Kaoru reminds Yahiko what she told him, but that no longer is a concern for Yahiko. With tears filled in his eyes, Yahiko says he doesn't care if he's stronger than most ten year olds; all he cares about is that he's considered weak amongst Kenshin, Sanosuke, and everyone else.

On his way home, Kenshin tries to figure out what he should do with the entire situation on hand. When the rurouni reaches a small bridge, the rising sun blinds him for a second. Kenshin shields his eyes, and before him stands the silver-haired figure. Kenshin's eyes widen, as he recognizes the man. Haunting images of the past appear before Kenshin. An angry young boy and his sad sister are seen by Kenshin's eyes standing next to the silver-haired figure. Kenshin refers to the boy as Enishi and calls out to the girl named Tomoe. Enishi gives off a wicked smile and asks Battousai if he just saw his sister's ghost.
