Enishi demands
that Kenshin receive the punishment of death
as a result of all the people he killed.
After being stabbed once more in the gut,
Kenshin can barely stand. Kaoru calls out
his name in worry, causing Enishi to look
over at her. He ponders for a moment, then
decides not to carry out what he was thinking.
Enishi had considered killing Kaoru right
before Kenshin's eyes, but he refuses to
do such a thing because such an action would
have lowered himself to his mortal enemy's
standards. So instead, Enishi tosses his
tachi at Kenshin and tells the rurouni to
kill himself.
When back
on his feet, Kenshin immediately hurls Enishi's
sword back at him. It is not because he
fears death that Kenshin had chosen not
to commit suicide, but because of the answer
he found when he was sent to that hell by
Enishi. Kenshin reminded himself why he
had picked up a sword in the first place,
to protect those in need. The people he
killed were all just trying to do the same,
and they just so happened to be unlucky
in battle. As long as there are people to
protect, Kenshin vows that he'll wield his
Sakabatou until the day he can no longer
fight.
Kenshin mentions
to Enishi that he had seen Tomoe's smile
when he found his answer and asks if his
sister is smiling for him now. There is
no smile on the face of the Tomoe Enishi
sees. Angered that the man who killed his
beloved sister saw her precious smile before
him, Enishi explodes.
